Your journey begins in Nairobi, where you’ll arrive and settle in before the adventure ahead. This evening is yours to relax, acclimatise, and prepare for the expedition into East Africa’s gemstone heartlands.

We set off early for a scenic drive toward Voi, a town uniquely positioned between the landscapes of the Tsavo National Park. Along the way, we pass through historical routes and striking countryside, with a relaxed mid-way stop for lunch—often enjoyed as a picnic. This journey offers a first glimpse into Kenya’s rich geological and cultural landscape.

These days are dedicated to exploring the world-renowned primary gemstone deposits around Voi. You will gain direct insight into mining areas producing a variety of gemstones, including ruby, tsavorite garnet, tourmaline, and sapphire. Alongside the gemstone experience, we also take time to explore the incredible Tsavo East National Park, one of Africa’s largest wildlife reserves. A special lunch inside the park offers a memorable break surrounded by raw, untouched nature.

We continue south toward the Tanzanian border, crossing at Holili before entering Tanga region. Upon arrival, there is time to settle in.

Today we explore the legendary Umba Valley, one of Tanzania’s most important secondary gemstone sources. Known for its rich riverbed deposits, the valley has produced a wide range of garnets and corundum over time. The day focuses on understanding secondary deposits, geological formation, and the history that makes this region so significant. Lunch is enjoyed on site, offering a genuine connection with the people behind the stones.

We travel north into the heart of Tanzania’s gemstone world—Arusha. The route takes us through diverse landscapes, including views of the Usambara and Pare Mountains, and through Moshi, the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro. This is a full journey through some of East Africa’s most iconic terrain.

A dedicated day exploring the famous Mererani Tanzanite Mines, the world’s only known source of tanzanite. Here, you will gain firsthand insight into mining practices, geology, and the rarity of this extraordinary gemstone.

A more refined day focused on sorting, selecting, and reviewing gemstones. You will also have the opportunity to design or refine jewellery pieces in collaboration with expert craftsmen, bringing your journey from source to creation full circle.

Your expedition concludes with onward transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), or transfer via Nairobi (JKIA) if continuing your journey elsewhere.
