Upon arrival in Dar es Salaam, you will be privately received and transferred to your selected hotel. Here, you will be introduced to your dedicated host, who will accompany you throughout your journey, ensuring a seamless and personalised experience from start to finish.

After a relaxed breakfast at your hotel, you will begin your journey to Morogoro aboard a scenic train ride with your dedicated host. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, offering a comfortable and memorable introduction to Tanzania’s changing landscapes.
Upon arrival in Morogoro, you will be met by your designated driver, who will accompany you for the remainder of your trip. The next two days will be spent exploring Morogoro’s gemstone-rich secondary (alluvial) deposits, offering a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of artisanal gemstone mining in the region. Visits to multiple mining sites around the Matombo area will provide insight into the different methods used to recover gemstones from mineral-bearing soils, while also highlighting the important role local mining communities play in the industry.
Throughout these visits, you will meet artisanal miners, learn about the challenges and opportunities of small-scale mining, and follow the journey of gemstones from source to trade. The varied locations offer different perspectives on the region’s geology, mining techniques, and daily life within the mining communities.
Each day includes a curated picnic lunch served on site, allowing time to enjoy the surrounding landscape and fully immerse yourself in the experience.
In the evenings, return to Morogoro to relax, with one evening featuring a scenic hillside experience overlooking the town before dinner and your overnight stay.

Continue your journey southwest of Morogoro toward Mahenge, renowned globally as the “spinel capital of the world.” The drive takes you through some of Tanzania’s most captivating and diverse landscapes, offering a truly immersive overland experience.
En route, you will pass through Mikumi National Park, where wildlife sightings may be possible depending on conditions, adding an unexpected safari element to your journey. A stop will be made midway for lunch, allowing you to rest and take in the surroundings.
After lunch, continue toward Mahenge as the scenery transforms into a rich mosaic of rice paddies, rural settlements, and the dramatic Eastern Arc Mountains. This route is not only visually striking but also deeply rooted in Tanzania’s cultural and regional diversity, offering insight into life across different landscapes of the country.

The following two days will be dedicated to exploring the renowned spinel deposits of Mahenge, one of the world’s most important sources of fine spinel. Through visits to multiple mining areas, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the region’s gemstone production, from extraction and processing to local trade.
In the Epanko Valley, located approximately 15 kilometres from Mahenge town, you will visit active mining operations known for producing vibrant hot pink spinel. Here, you will observe mining and processing techniques distinct from those encountered elsewhere, including spinel extraction from marble and alluvial recovery using jig systems. There will also be an opportunity to participate in hands-on material sorting and create your own small gemstone souvenirs.
Further exploration of the Mahenge district will introduce you to additional mining areas, including the Lukande region, which is known for producing spinel in a variety of colours and characteristics. These visits provide valuable insight into the geological diversity that makes Mahenge such a remarkable gemstone source.
Lunches will be enjoyed either at the mining sites or in Mahenge town, depending on the day’s activities. During your stay, you will also visit the local gem market, where you will have the opportunity to view and acquire gemstones directly from miners and traders, offering a firsthand look at the region’s active gemstone trade.

The next three days will be spent travelling from Mahenge to Karatu, journeying through some of Tanzania’s most diverse and scenic landscapes. Departing Mahenge, you will retrace part of your route to Morogoro, with opportunities to enjoy the changing scenery and, where conditions allow, spot local wildlife along the way. A lunch stop will be made en route before arriving in Morogoro, where you will have time to relax and enjoy a comfortable overnight stay.
The journey then continues northward through Tanzania’s central highlands towards Dodoma, the nation’s administrative capital. As the landscapes gradually transform, you will gain a broader appreciation of the country’s geographical diversity before settling in for another restful evening.
On the final leg of the journey, travel onward to Karatu, the gateway to Tanzania’s renowned northern safari circuit. The route passes through striking scenery as the terrain shifts from open plains to the lush highlands surrounding the Ngorongoro region. Upon arrival, take time to unwind and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this vibrant safari town before the next stage of your adventure begins.

The next three days will be spent exploring the Serengeti, one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations. Set within a remote mining landscape, this visit provides valuable insight into the geology and extraction of one of the country’s most distinctive gemstones.
You will also spend time in Arusha, widely regarded as Tanzania’s gemstone trading centre. Here, you will enjoy exclusive access to a private gem office, where a carefully curated collection of loose gemstones and bespoke jewellery can be viewed in a relaxed and personal setting. Depending on availability, there may also be opportunities to observe aspects of the cutting and finishing process, offering a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship behind each piece.
